Subterranean Poetry : A Poetry Place

A Poetry Place

Between May and October 99 Buzzwords ran a Poetry Place residency. funded by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and The Poetry Society. Poet and travel writer Paul Hyland worked in East Cleveland for twelve days, running workshops, surgeries, carrying out research and interviews and digging into the history, culture and communities of the area. During his visits Paul worked with artists and writers who produced collaborative material which would make a very strong publication given more funding. The residency included workshops in Rosecroft Comprehensive School, workshops with Saltburn Writers Group and Saltburn Artists Studios, a reading in the Tom Leonard Mining Museum, Skinningrove, a research visit into Boulby Potash Mine for a group of eight writers/artists and a celebration reading at Pendrey’s Eating House in Saltburn. Since the residency there has been an exhibition of visuals and words at Village Arts in February 2000, and a selection of the work was shown at an exhibition by Saltburn Artists Ann Hamilton and Margaret Hayden in Skinningrove during July 2000.
