Writers Andy Willoughby and Bob Beagrie have been working with teenage mums and mums-to-be in Hartlepool. Over a 12 week programme of creative workshops, the participants explored the three trimesters of pregnancy and the experience of motherhood through a variety of creative writing and drama activities. The result is a powerful DVD and booklet of written work, revealing the highs and lows, the difficulties and the achievements of these young mothers as they travelled the rocky road of teenage pregnancy.
3 of the young people are now applying to college, which they said they wouldn’t have done before the project, and during the course of the programme the participants developed the following skills:
Communication – speaking and listening, adapting register for audience, acting, discussion, reciting, speaking to camera, interviewing and being interviewed
Literacy – looking at a range of literary models, autobiographical writing, script writing, poetry and short fiction
With thanks to Hartlepool NHS Primary Care Trust Public Health Grant Scheme, Hartlepool Teenage Pregnancy Partnership and Hartlepool Voluntary Development Agency for funding and supporting this project.
